As I’ve mentioned elsewhere with similar models, these Kalas with the solid aged cedar tops are amongst my all time favourites from Kala. They all carry such warmth and are a real joy to play. The have a creamy richness which other cedar topped ukes are often missing. The paduak binding, rosette and fretboard binding (a naturally red wood) look amazing and the slotted headstock adds a touch of class. Kala are changing their wood combinations so this model won’t be around for too much longer sadly. I’ll be sad to see it go.
This particular model is a 5 string features both a low G and a high G. It’s a bit of a hidden secret that 5 string players know – they really do sound lush with that extra depth of the low G and the jangliness you get from the high G. It really fills out the sound and creates a lovely tone. The two G strings are in a single course so you play it just like a normal 4 string ukulele.
