I have to admit my heart skipped a little beat when I opened the case to this one. It’s really pretty with beautiful falling leaves inlays going from the headstock, down the fingerboard (cleverly marking the 5, 7, 10, 12 frets) and onto the body. Very lovely. The solid koa is very nice too and really pings under the gloss finish.
I’m pleased to say that it plays and sounds lovely too with a low action and mellow but loud koa sound. The titanium strings work really well on this one. It also features a wide 1.5 inch nut (the same width as Kanile’a) which make fingering chords and scales really comfortable
The ebony headplate is really well done too and abalone purfling and rosette finish it off nicely. As with all Mai’s you get the odd inconsistency in the finish. These are very minimal and to get a solid koa tenor with inlay work, with case for under £550 is an absolute steal.
