We’re incredibly lucky to have one of the best luthiers right here in the Forest of Dean. Phil is hugely respected in the bluegrass and old time community for his fabulous instruments including banjos, mandolins and guitars. His ukes are absolutely second to none. I don’t know how he does it (well I have some idea!) but his ukes have a depth of tone that I’ve not heard in many other places. They all have a real oomph in the bass and mid register especially. When you play them next to your body you can feel the vibrations right through your body! And of course this translates into a really special tone.
This very special concert is made from beautifully figured maple, with a spruce top. The tobacco sunburst and gloss finish really is stunning. It reminds me of vintage guitars from the 40s. It has a maple neck and ebony fingerboard, bridge and faceplate. It is an absolute stunner. It features Phil’s logo in abalone and is string with Aquilas. It has one of the most amazingly thin neck profiles I’ve seen and is so comfortable to play.
There is a tiny bit of test-play wear where you can see Phil has strummed it but it would look like this after you’ve owned it a short while anyway.
The tone on this one has heaps of body and depth but a bit more sparkle in the high end than the other concert we have. It suits all styles of play. This is an incredible heirloom quality luthier built ukulele that someone will treasure.
