Shane Heighway builds beautiful ukuleles over in Finland and we’ve been planning to stock some of his special ukes for some time. This first one was worth the wait. It is an all solid tenor with a cedar top and really stunning tiger myrtle back and sides. It features a subtle radius fretboard which makes it an absolute joy to play and a side sound port so you can really enjoy the tone coming towards your ears as well as out of the front. Everything about it feels so right in the hand. The neck has a really comfortable C profile and I love how it segues perfectly into the classy headstock which is adorned with my favourite tuners (Gotoh UPTs – the look of friction tuners but actually geared.)
We have a bog oak faceplate and binding, which looks just fantatsic, an Ebony fingerboard and bridge and a bone saddle. Shane has even fitted it with a superb LR Baggs 5.0 pickup for a natural sound when plugged in.
This is one of the most responsive ukuleles I have ever played. Even a very gently touch when fingerpicking produces really clear notes with a lovely depth in tone. This really suits expressive playing. The sound is bright with a very good volume. If you wanted to mellow it out a little this would handle a low G string beautifully.
Being handmade there are a couple of tiny little details like a few micro marks from the buffer and natural marks in the cedar. But they pale in significance to the overall deluxe feel of this beautiful handmade instrument. It just feels classy with an excellent poly finish, beautifully graded died neck and it plays like a dream.
We’re looking forward to Shane building us more ukes – each one unique, but grab this while you can. I don’t think it’ll hang around for long!
